Treatment Options
Lifestyle Modifications: Making healthy lifestyle changes can often improve erectile function. This may include maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol consumption, and managing stress through relaxation techniques or therapy.
Medications: Several oral medications are available to treat erectile dysfunction, including sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), vardenafil (Levitra), and avanafil (Stendra). These medications work by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping to achieve and maintain an erection during sexual stimulation.
Vacuum Devices: Vacuum erection devices (VEDs) are non-invasive devices that use a vacuum pump to draw blood into the penis, creating an erection. A constriction ring is then placed at the base of the penis to maintain the erection during intercourse.
Penile Injections: Injectable medications such as alprostadil can be administered directly into the penis to help produce an erection. This treatment is often effective for men who do not respond to oral medications or cannot take them due to contraindications.
Penile Implants: For men with severe erectile dysfunction that does not respond to other treatments, surgical placement of a penile implant may be an option. There are two main types of penile implants: inflatable implants, which allow the penis to be inflated and deflated as needed, and semi-rigid implants, which keep the penis permanently firm but can be bent downwards for concealment.
